My Review:
When I received the book pitch for Open Minds, I didn’t accept right away as I was unsure I would enjoy the genre. I normally don’t read sci-fi/fantasy. I found Open Minds to fit under the YA, sci-fi, fantasy, and paranormal genre. Before accepting this book to read, I read the customer reviews to see if I could enjoy the book.
Open Minds follows Kira Moore, who finds herself to be somewhat of an outcast because of her inability to do what her peers and everyone around her can do. Everyone can read and communicate in their minds. She soon discovers she does have an ability, a very special one, unlike she has ever seen. Until Simon approaches her. He shows her what she can do and helps her practice and develop her skill.
Kira is forced to keep her ability a secret as it is not the norm and readers are not aware of this secret ability. Kira is taken on a journey to save her life and others like her. While hiding her ability, she is forced to lie to her family and her best friend, Raf. She lies to the people who love and care about her the most.
I found the two boys in Kira’s life to be so different. Simon is the bad boy who likes to push the limits, while Raf is the nice guy. He wants to protect Kira and help her in any way he can. Simon does seem to care about Kira and I don’t fault her for falling under his spell. Who doesn’t crush on a bad boy? Raf is the constant in Kira’s life. He’s genuine and sweet. I liked both Simon and Raf in different ways!
Kira is a hero and a crusader to take on so many people who wanted to silence and control her and others like her.
